About Laura

Sometime in 2013, I decided to stop worrying about it, dreaming about it, wishing for it and just get TO it. “It” being leading the life I’ve always imagined myself living, where more of my time was spent doing the things I love, especially those things that came naturally, felt effortless and were things I believe I was put on earth to do. (You have those things, too, don’t you?)

One of those things is writing. I’ve been writing for many years, but sharing what I write is new. It began with the journal I kept when I was 18 and traveling across the country on my own. I made a stop in Colorado to visit the college I’d soon attend, sleeping in the spare room of a friend’s house, feeling blissfully at home in the mountains and missing my first love terribly. Each night I laid in my sleeping bag and poured out my thoughts. As my journey continued, so did the daily entries in the small, spiral notebook, until the pages ran out, a few days after I arrived back home.

There’s a stack of journals, now, tucked away in a closet. They chronicle adventures, affirmations, loves and losses, trips to foreign cities and journeys inward. For a few years, I felt that parts of myself were packed away, too, waiting patiently to come out, when there was time. And then, suddenly, for a few days I thought a lot about time, because my doctor called and said “You have cancer.”

It’s been over a year since that phone call and illness is, thankfully, in my rear view mirror. To my surprise, my experience with cancer included many blessings, silver linings and days filled with gratitude. It also challenged me, body and soul and ultimately, it’s made me brave. I’ll tell you more about that, here.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting! Please comment, if you’re so inclined; I’m interested in whatever you have to say.

PS: Please forgive grammatical errors and know that some of them are intentional.

    Laura,

You are a wonderful writer. Loved your last post about beauty. Men suffer from the same cultural affliction – the pursuit of youth and the perfect masculine form. I rather enjoy the pursuit, but realize it is both elusive and in the end unattainable. Like many other things in life it is more about the journey than the outcome. Outcomes are static; journeys are fluid, transitory and exciting. I do like looking into the mirror and knowing that I have tried. I have learned over the years to be generous with myself…it makes it easier to be more generous with others.

      My Dear Eric,
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and for leaving such an eloquent, thoughtful and inspiring comment. I enjoyed every word and was especially moved by your heartfelt thoughts about generosity. Although we’ve known each other for many years, seeing you “in print” reminds me why I cherish you and our friendship. I’m grateful to be sharing my journey with you!
      With love,

    Hi Laura,
I love your story and your blog! Thank you for reading and liking so many of my posts, and following. I hope you know what you’ve gotten yourself into! As you can tell I’m an irreverent, self deprecating, potty mouth in the telling of my stories.
    Keep living large!

I agree it is important to do the things that we can do and that express who we are because we were meant to do them.
